OIC: More Empty Promises

The rulers of the 57-nation Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the second largest inter-governmental bloc after the United Nations -which claims to represent 1.5 billion Muslims from across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, made the 'Dakar Declaration' after a recent two-day summit in Senegal's capital. The OIC was set up in Rabat, Morocco, on September 25, 1969 in reaction to an arson attack against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in 1969. The primary goals of the OIC are, according to its Status, "to promote solidarity among all Islamic member states."

All the Muslim nations across the world have membership of the organisation that convenes every three years to agree on motions to create solidarity amongst the Muslim nations. A number of changes to its charter were announced for its March 2008 meeting alongside many recommendations from participating members.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called for greater democracy and efforts to improve the plight of Muslims and spread Islamic values. He went on to say "The possibility of an Islamic renaissance lies before us. We need to get our act together as an organisation of Muslim nations." He also called for a Jihad for peace in order to tackle terrorism and extremism around the world. The Conference adopted the motto 'The Islamic Ummah in the 21st Century' and leaders reiterated the sanctity of al Quds and condemned Israeli aggression. They also called for a just solution to the crisis in Lebanon.

The OIC conference actually shows how pathetic and insincere these tyrant rulers have become, how they have no shame at the continual betrayal they display and contempt for the Muslims. The OIC just like the Arab summit has become a mere talking shop where no actions ever materialize. The conference declared a 10-year plan of action in its final communiqué, the rulers agree such recommendations after all summits and conferences with little change afterwards.

The rulers reiterated their support for the Palestinian cause however; Turkeys Abdullah Gul sitting across the table from Mahmood Abbas saw nothing wrong with his nation's defence agreements with Israel. Egypt also had no shame in closing its border to the Muslims in Gaza and participating in the killing of Muslims with Israel, yet at the same time it called for a just settlement for Palestine.

The conference ended without any detail for the implementation of the various proposals put forward for the Muslim world. This is categorical evidence the rulers have no concern for the ummah, for even when they meet to discuss the ummah's affairs they depart without any road map on how such measures will be achieved. The OIC conference is clearly an attempt by the rulers to show the ummah they have some concern; however the ummah is not fooled by their treachery.

If the rulers were sincere they would boycott Israel and impose an embargo on all goods globally that have to pass through Muslim lands to reach Israel. If Saudi Arabia really cared about the ummah it would not house US troops and provide them with the use of the Prince Sultan airbase, similarly Qatar would not allow the use of the regions largest airstrip for US B52 bombers. If any of the rulers cared about the plight of the Muslims in Lebanon they would remove all foreign interference in the nation. If Pakistan really has any concern for the Muslims of Kashmir it would not work hand in hand with its enemy – India.

If any of the rulers were really true to their statements then they would implement Islam in their lands, unify the different Muslim lands into one and ensure one Khaleefah was appointed who takes charge of the affairs of this ummah. The rulers have lost all credibility amongst the ummah and their demise is close as prophesised by Muhammad (saw) in his hadith:

"The Prophethood will last among you for as long as Allah wills, then Allah would take it away. Then it will be (followed by) a Khilafah Rashida (rightly guided) according to the ways of the Prophethood. It will remain for as long as Allah wills, then Allah would take it away. Afterwards there will be a hereditary leadership, which will remain for as long as Allah wills, then He will lift it if He wishes. Afterwards, there will be biting oppression, and it will last for as long as Allah wishes, then He will lift it if He wishes. Then there will be a Khilafah Rashida according to the ways of the Prophethood." Then he kept silent. (Musnad Imam Ahmad (v/273))
