More than a year and a half have passed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. After the events of the spring of 2014, when the Russian Federation annexed Crimea and launched a separatist revolt in the Donbass, the United States was able to effectively impose its agenda in the Ukrainian crisis.
Question: Why did Russia move militarily against Ukraine when it revealed its intention of seeking to join NATO, and did not take any military action against Finland, which actually joined the alliance, nor did it move anything against Sweden, whose accession to the alliance is now a matter of time?
From the outset, since the demise of the Soviet Union and the dismantling of the Warsaw Pact, NATO became a meandering, rudderless entity – but only for a while. The US agonized with what to do with it after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the de facto end of the Cold War.
