PM Scott Morrison issued a statement to the Muslim community ‘commemorating’ the arrival of the month of Ramadhan. Unsurprisingly, he has taken the opportunity to continue the tradition of his predecessors by framing any engagement with Muslims through the lens of securitisation.
Ramadhan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, where Muslims worldwide recommit themselves to Allah through a month of elevated virtue, sacrifice, service, and worship. Instead of acknowledging the enormity of this effort and the deep sense of spirituality drawn from it, the PM instead chose to remind us of the ever-present threat of terrorism and extremism, and the supposed role of Muslims in countering it.
He also took the opportunity to reinforce the fragile place of Muslims in this country, whereby our humanity needs to be constantly affirmed and our existence consistently assured.
If our presence was appreciated, it would not have to be repeatedly stressed. If our existence were assured, it would not need a regular reminder. The fact that it is, by no less than the PM, demonstrates the precise opposite.
Muslims do not need recognition from the very people who have built their careers on the dehumanisation of Muslims and who are responsible for grave crimes committed against Muslims at home and abroad.
Muslims will enjoy a blessed Ramadhan when Western armies are removed from Islamic lands and the entire footprint of colonialism is permanently uprooted. We look forward to this day and are working passionately for its realisation, even if the PM wants us to forget how he and his predecessors have long fought these very efforts.
Ramadhan Mubarak, O Muslims!
