The Environmental Problem
Its Causes & Islam's Solution

Copenhagen - 29. Dhul Hidjah 1430 A.H. / 16. December 2009 CE

In relation to the ongoing debate on the climate and the increasing focus on the condition of the environment, Hizb ut-Tahrir in Denmark has issued a booklet titled "The Environmental Problem - Its Causes & Islam's Solution".

The booklet points out the cultural causes behind the incompetence of the Western capitalist states in solving the environmental problem. It highlights the major industrial countries' erroneous diagnosis and treatment of the environmental problem, and it clarifies that the solutions of the Western great powers practically serve the interests of their large industries at the expense of the environment. Furthermore, the booklet explains the Islamic view on the environment, as well as the way in which the institutions of the coming Islamic Khilafah-state will deal with the environmental problem.

The booklet, which exists in Danish as well as English and Arabic, has been distributed widely during the ongoing climate conference. It is possible to read or download the booklet at the following links:

Assalamu alaikum,
We can save the earth if we reduce our meat and dairy consumption. 51 percent of all greenhouse gasses are cause by livestock farming. Today's factory farms also causes a lot of suffering to animals (and furthermore it contributes to hunger and poverty in the world), which is truly haram but we are still eating the meat. Oh Muslim brothers and sisters, let's become conscious about this, for more info: www.islamveg.com

Salam alaikum,

The problem is much greater than that. Now they haven't agreed upon anything at the COP15, but if they in future agree upon a solution, whether in Mexico or sometime in the future it would be build upon the solutions in Kyoto, which is presented in the book.

To answer the question :

1. First of all there is a total lack of transparency in the national quotas, and in the control of these, and in the issuing of these to companies. So they are often exagurated.

2. When you allow companies to trade with these quotas, which they actually got for free, then it does not matter at all whether consumers lower there CO2 in terms of using new electrical goods which use lower electricity. Because if consumers or companies cut in there usage of CO2, the remaining would just be sold to other companies so that they can use more than was given to them in the first hand from there national countries.
So there is no incitament to lower carbon, well only if you can earn money by selling the rest of your quotas. Which is exactly what has happened in the Kyoto-agreement.

3. Regarding the total amount of carbon, yes if the system was transparent, which it has never been in Kyoto and never will be in any future agreement, one could conclude that even though CO2 is traded between companies the total amount is still been cut. NO!
4. Capitalist states and capitalists companies would ofcourse never accept such an idea, because it would put restraints on their output. So they invented another scheme, CDM, to override this. Through these so called green projects in developing countries capitalist companies in the west can get extra quotas. And these projects are again lacking totally in transparency. And often these projects contribute to more harm for the environment. SO the total amount agreed upon can be raised through these projects.

Conclusion is then that first of all such schemes would give advantages to the large western companies since they have the strongest and biggests budgets, so there would be an accumulation of quotas in their hands, which would mean the smaller companies would not survive, espacially those in the developing countries. This is in line with their agreements in WTO and IMF regulations in developing countries.

And this would mean that our countries would never be able to industrialize themselves because they would lack in quotas , if they in the future joined such an agreement. And this is ofcource the reason why China is not accepting such terms, since this would mean putting restraints on Chinas economic development.

And finally such a scheme would ensure that the very companies (western) who are to blame for the environmental problems are the ones getting or bying the quotas so that they can pollute some more.

This is why it is clear that such a solution only serves western interests and not the environment. And what makes this even more cynical is the fact, that while they talk about lowering carbon, the same countries are filling the third world with toxic waste of all kind, which is destroying the environment.

I presume, even though the quotas are fixed, companies in industrialized nations will want to maximize their profit which in turn results in CO2 emission exceeding their quotas. In order to exceed this quota (and pollute more), they will buy quota from smaller countries/ companies with green technology. Thus, in the end, CO2 emission will reach the maximum world quota . On the other hand, smaller countries may not use up their quotas, which, if they don't, and industrial nations emit CO2 only up to their quota, the total CO2 emission would be less than the stated total world quota. And all this is assuming that these capitalists really follow the agreement....

"even when companies invest in new technology to reduce
"carbon-emissions the total carbon-emissions will not decline,
since the companies that have excess of CO2- quotas will sell
them to other companies that will use them to increase
pollution." page 18 (last para)
why selling the carbon quotas create a problem science total number of quotas are fixed?Isn't the total emmision will decrease at expected level if we maintain the total emission according to the total quotas ?
