Deobandi ‘Ulema Raised Funds for the Uthmani Khilafah

E-mail Print PDF

This is an extract from the book Pan-Islamism: Indian Muslims, the Ottomans and Britain (1877-1924) by Azmi Ozcan. It shows how the Deobandi ‘Ulema gave massive financial aid to the Uthmani Khilafah in its war against Russia in 1877. This shows the committment and support of the Deobandi ‘Ulema to the Khilafah.

InshAllah we pray that the 'Ulema throughout the world today become the foremost workers for the re-establishment of the Khilafah since they are the people of knowledge and the inheritors of the Prophets.

"The Official Ottoman register, Defter-i Iane-i Hindiyye, which was specially compiled and submitted to the inspection of Abdulhamid, reveals valuable information about the organizations and individuals who were active in raising subscriptions for the relief funds. The register shows that the Indian Muslims had formed many societies for the purpose of rendering relief to the Ottomans. They were mainly under the names of the Anjuman-i Islam (which was the most common), the Anjuman-iTeeyyid-i Turkiye, (the Society of Aid to Turkey), and the Meclis-i Mueyyid-i Islamiyya, (the Assembly of Islamic Aid). Again, institutions of religious education, especially the Daru'l-Ulum Deoband, were most enthusiastically involved in this endeavour. The staff and the students of Deobandi Seminary not only themselves contributed largely but also invited others and indeed organized the collection of funds. The Ottoman documents often referred to the efforts of moulvis Muhammad Qasim (1833-1877), Muhammed Refi ud-Din, Muhammed Yaqub (d. 1886), and Muhammad Abid among the teachers (mudarrisun) of the Daru'l-Ulum Deoband."

The Uthmaani also supported the Muslims overseas in struggles against the Portuguese, and the Indonesians against the Dutch. The Central Asian Khanates and certain states in the Caucasus had links with the Uthmaani State. There were even earlier links to West Africa, where the Uthmaani gave firearms to Mali, and support against the Spanish and Portuguese (who began to appear in the Indian Ocean). When the Muslims East Turkistan established an independent state from China, they gained recognition from the Uthmaani. However with British financial support the Chinese were encouraged to incorporate that state (and hence deny it to the expanding Tsarist Russian Empire). In the wider world the British and Russians were engaged in a major rivalry from the Balkans through to the Far East and Japan, and neither nation wanted the other to have influence in any states in the region. As it turns out China would itself fall victim to colonialism and partitioning by Russia and the Maritime colonial states.

These are worth delving into and analyzing. The Hungarian nationalists sometimes took refuge with the Uthmaanis when rebelling against the Habsburg Austrian Empire, (until Austria-Hungary was established). As a note of interest there was even once a diplomatic mission between the Uthmaani State and Japan (which had to rapidly modernize after being opened up Commodore Perry of the U.S Navy).
