The Khilafah historically had one of the strongest armies in the world with advanced technology. The cannon (used by the Muslims) in order to conquer Istanbul in 1453 CE was the first of its type. European nations feared the Khilafah due to its strength and economic might. Islamic military history is littered with generals and leaders such as Khalid bin Waleed (RA), Amr ibn al-As (RA), Tariq bin Ziyad, Salahudeen Ayubi and Sultan Muhammad al Fatih, the conqueror of Constantinople (Istanbul); these individuals served Islam and brought dignity to the Muslim Ummah. During the 16th century CE the Othmani Khilafah had the strongest army in the world and the Black Sea was known as the “Ottoman Lake” as the Khilafah’s territory surrounded the Black sea. Since the destruction of the Khilafah in 1924, the Muslim world has not developed any major military equipment and has also failed to produce the likes of the above mentioned leaders.
The current Muslim world lives in the shadow of the Khilafah of the past and does not have the same might and honour as the Khilafah had. Hence the only way for the Muslim world to rise again is to establish the Khilafah as this entity is central for the Muslim Ummah Inshallah.
Many believe that the Muslim world is weak and cannot present a challenge to the major powers of the world. Despite corrupt governments and weak rulers, some of the Muslim countries have made some key military advances such as Pakistan, Turkey, Iran and Indonesia. Hence the infrastructure and technical skills for the development of military hardware does exist within the Muslim lands and once the Khilafah is established the state would develop policies to enhance and increase its capabilities.
Pakistan has produced the following military hardware:
Al-Khalid and Al-Zarrar tanks (Developed by Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT))
The multi role combat aircraft JF-17 thunder (this combat aircraft was produced in conjunction with China)
MFI-17 Mushshak training aircraft
UAVs (Unmanned aerial vehicles)
Pakistan has the 6th largest army in the world
Turkey has produced the following military hardware:
Fighter aircraft under license (Produced by The Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI))
Aircraft parts for Boeing and Airbus
Turkey has the 7th largest army in the world
Turkey has the second largest army within NATO
Turkey has plans to develop its own fighter jet (in house) by 2020.
Iran has produced the following military hardware:
The Sa'eqeh single-seat fighter jet
Indonesia has produced the following military hardware:
Designed and developed civilian and military regional commuter aircraft
Armaments and military vehicles
These developments need to be built and show the Khilafah will have capability to defend itself from its inception.
Parts of the Muslim world are located in strategic parts of the world; for example Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt have airspace and naval bases that are vital to the world. This is why the colonial powers have competed to have a stranglehold over such countries in the Muslim world. The Othmani Khilafah had control over the Bosphorus strait and forced other nations to seek its permission to pass through the Bosphorus; never did the Khilafah comprise its own security by allowing hostile nations to use its land or strategic strait’s or naval bases.
Some of the policies of the future Khilafah in relation to producing and enhancing the military of the could include:
Upgrading the current infrastructure that is used to develop military hardware
Working towards self-reliance i.e. not depending upon outside powers for the development of military hardware
Developing institutions which will produce engineers, pilots, doctors etc
Developing military systems
The above polices will ensure that the Khilafah works towards having a strong and modern military. Currently, the Muslim world has an abundance of natural resources and manpower that will allow the Khilafah to become a global power. The Khilafah will have many advantages from its inception such as:
Largest army in the world
Large land mass
Control of strategic airspace, strategic straits and naval bases
Access to large amounts of natural resources
It will take time for the Khilafah to develop and enhance its military; however the Khilafah will have a system in place that will allow it to develop the best military hardware. The major powers of the world achieved its military might through decades of research and development.
The Khilafah will aim to have the best military within the world as this will allow the Khilafah to maintain peace and security within its own borders and the rest of the world and the military might of the Khilafah will also ensure that no global power colonises the Muslim world as we see today. The state will produce the likes of Muhammad bin Qasim who will serve the Khilafah and Islam. The Khilafah will become a beacon of light for the whole of mankind and a model which all nations will aspire to Inshallah.

DEFENDING THE HOMELAND
BUILDING THE KHILAFAH’S DEFENCES
The ability of any nation to defend its borders from foreign threats is essential for its very existence. For a nation to be considered independent protecting its territorial integrity is essential otherwise its very existence comes into question. A nation that is able to secure its territorial integrity can then focus on internal development and prosperity, not having to worry about external interference. This situation is achieved through development of an industrial base that manufacturers military hardware. This then makes a nation capable of defending its borders and also makes it self-sufficient in this endeavour. This deterrent capability also gives a nation power projection capabilities, this then allows it to play a role in the world well beyond its region.
Throughout history civilisations, nations, tribes and empires constructed armies to defend their lands, they built weapons industries of varying types and harnessed whatever technology was possible in their era to defend their lands and project power. A cursory glance at history shows the worlds powers all had large armies, advanced weapons and had a cutting edge over their competitors. The Roman Empire, the British empire, the USA, Bonaparte’s France, Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, the Soviet Union, China as well as the Khilafah, all constructed military industries and armies so they could defend their borders and project power globally.
It is not surprising those nations that have advanced military industries are also the world’s powers and have developed an international system that protects their interests. When we look at the Muslim world however, we find most nations are not independent with their military requirements and most of them rely on the west for basic security, this is why it is not surprising that most of the rulers across the Muslim world are not independent.
The events of the Arab spring have, however shown the ummah is attempting to change this status quo and take her destiny into her own hands. Removing foreign interference and securing her borders will be essential to break free from the decades of western interference. This report is the fifth in a series looking at how the Khilafah would deal with critical areas of a new state. Industry, education, energy and foreign policy have been researched and analysed in previous publications. This report will analyse how nations in the modern era secure their borders, project power and create an image of strength. It will analyse the military strength of the world’s powers in order to encapsulate the factors the future Khilafah state need to consider. It will analyse the state of the defence-industrial base in the Muslim countries assessing where the strengths are and where development is needed. The report will outline the polices the Khilafah will need to implement to defend the homeland and build its defences.
