BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Hizb Ut-Tahrir movement said Wednesday that Palestinian Authority Preventive Security have a supporter in custody in Salfit after 50 days without trial or indictment.
The pan-Islamist movement said Shahir Assaf from the Biddya village in the northern West Bank district was detained on 12 July "from the street without an arrest warrant." A statement said Assaf has been detained by PA forces seven times over the past two years.
His family previously appealed to the Palestinian High Court to ensure his release but the "security services took advantage of the PA court's haggling to detain him for the longs period possible," the statement read.
The party accused the PA judiciary of "colluding with security services to prolong Assaf's detention," as the court "took a long time" before setting a hearing.
According to the movement, the court gave the prosecution 15 days to provide a reason for the detention, and the hearing was postponed three times.
Hizb Ut-Tahrir has accused the PA of waging a politically-motivated arrest campaign against its supporters. On Friday, the movement said several affiliates were detained at a mosque in Ramallah just before prayer. They were released a day later, the party said.
