An Asian man and his son have been attacked by a hammer-wielding thug in a mosque car park in Greater Manchester.
The two victims, aged 55 and 29, were targeted by a white man as they walked to their vehicle in Ashton-under-Lyne.
The offender sprayed a substance in their faces and then hit them both with a hammer.
Greater Manchester Police are not treating not treating the incident as race-related.
Both men suffered head injuries and were taken to hospital, where the son remains in a stable condition. His father was later discharged.
Police appealed for witnesses to the incident in Newton Street at about 5.30pm on Monday.
Detective Constable Graeme Masheter, of Ashton CID, said: "This was a completely unprovoked attack on a father and son who were simply going about their business.
"It is unclear why these two men would be targeted in this way. The attack took place outside a mosque and the two men are Asian, but it is not being treated as a racist incident.
"I'm appealing for anyone who may have any information at all to help us trace this offender."
The attacker is described as white, about 6ft, and of slim build. He was wearing dark clothing and a dark hat.
