Bishkek, February 18, Interfax - The number of detained extremists, including members of the outlawed Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir, has grown in Kyrgyzstan's capital, Bishkek, the Kyrgyz Interior Ministry said.
34 Hizb ut-Tahrir leaders and members were arrested in 2009, compared to 14 in 2008.
The number of Hizb ut-Tahrir extremist booklets and other materials found has also grown, the ministry said.
"Religious extremists are intensifying their activities and using advanced technology to broaden their influence," the ministry said.
The ministry suggested "stepping up preventive measures and interaction between governmental agencies, the police, public and international organizations."
