Religious prisoner tortured to death

Uznews

Uznews.net - Ismat Hudoyberdiyev, 52, who was serving his prison term for alleged membership of Hizb-ut Tahrir, was tortured to death in Zarafshon's prison No 64/48, the Initiative Group of Independent Human Rights Activists of Uzbekistan has reported.

The group said that today it received information that Ismat Hudoyberdiyev from Surhandarya Region who had been serving his sentence since 2002 had died as a result of torture.

His death has become another blow to his wife Musharraf who now has to bury her second husband who died as a result of torture in the Islam Karimov regime's prisons.

Musharraf was married to Farhod Usmanov who was one of the first victims of torture. Usmanov, a son of an imam, was a market trader and had six children. He was arrested aged 42 in summer 1999 for alleged membership of Hizb-ut Tahrir.

After detention, he was held in the Interior Ministry's building in Tashkent where he was tortured to death on the 11th day of the investigation.

Usmanov's death sent shockwaves in Uzbekistan and abroad. Hizb-ut Tahrir's office in the UK posted photographs of the slain asking "Who killed Farhod Usmanov?" in London.

In 2002, Musharraf married Ismat Hudoyberdiyev, who was detained the same year. Few months ago, she started seeking assistance from human rights organisations, suspecting that her second husband was being tortured and would be killed, like Farhod Usmanov.

She told the initiative group that she had not been able to contact her husband for six months because the prison administration told her that Hudoyberdiyev had been held in a punishment cell.

"She said she had learnt that prison guards tortured her husband systematically and that she had complained about this to the Uzbek prosecutor-general and the head of the Uzbek Interior Ministry's penal system, but she had not received answers," the initiative group said in a press release.

Musharraf now has to take care of nine underage children.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un

Think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord; They rejoice in the bounty provided by Allah. And with regard to those left behind, who have not yet joined them (in their bliss), the (martyr's) glory in the fact that on them is no fear, nor have they (cause to) grieve. (3:169-170)
