More4 News: HT in Kyrgystan

More4 News reports from Kyrgyzstan, where political Islam is on the rise.

The former Soviet republic in central Asia is not a place reporters often travel to.

It is inhospitable and obscure to the point of parody but like the other vast states of central Asia, it is the stage for one of the world's more hidden fronts in the clash of civilisations and one group at the forefront of the turmoil is well known to the British public. The population is overwhelmingly Muslim, although the government retains the official atheism of Soviet times.

The rise of political Islam is led in the main by Hizb ut Tahrir, a controversial protest group here in Britain, and an important social force internationally.
