It has been narrated that Jabir رضي الله عنه said that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
"Do not acquire knowledge in order to vie with scholars, and to wrangle with the foolish, and to sit in the best seats: whoever does that his abode will be the Fire, the Fire."
Reported by Ibn Hibbaan in his Sahih. Al-Haakim has graded as sahih and az-Zahabi agreed. It has also been reported by Ibn Maajah, al-Bayhaqi, Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr in his his book Jami bayan al¬‘ilm wa fadlihi.
