Erdogan is no hero

E-mail Print PDF

The prime minister of Turkey returned home yesterday from the world economic forum to a hero's welcome.  His "marvelous" feat was the act of walking out of the summit after a heated exchange with Shimon Peres regarding the Israeli aggression against Gaza.

Erdogan has also made some fiery statements regarding Gaza and is slowly being viewed as one of the harshest opponents of Israels' aggression.

Erdogan, speaking at a municipal election campaign rally in Anatolia, said Israel was

"perpetrating inhuman actions which would bring it to self-destruction. Allah will sooner or later punish those who transgress the rights of innocents."

If you look past these statements and his "walkout" at the summit, it's very clear that Turkey is Israel's greatest ally in the region.

  • Turkey has a long history of close ties with Israel. It was the first Muslim country to recognize it in 1949.
  • In 2006 the Israeli foreign ministry characterised its relationship with Turkey as "perfect".
  • Turkey is Israel's 8th largest trading partner and their annual trade is worth around 4 billion dollars.
  • Turkey and Israel have a military alliance. Their militaries have conducted joint exercises particularly their navies. Israeli pilots even trained in Turkish air space, flying training sorties from a Turkish base near Ankara. Israel has supplied unmanned air vehicles to monitor Kurdish rebel activities in Turkey's southeast.
  • The Erdogan government appointed General Buyukanit's as Chief of Staff of the armed forces, he is known to be pro-Israeli and one of his jobs has been to weed out anti-Israeli sentiment among Turkey's senior military brass.
  • In 2006 the Jerusalem Post reported that Israel and Turkey were negotiating the construction of a multi-million-dollar energy and water project that will transport water, electricity, natural gas and oil by pipelines to Israel.

So we shouldn't be duped by these empty symbolic acts, Turkey and Israel might be having a lovers tiff, but that's all it is.

One last point to mention is that if the Turkish people can give Erdogan a hero's welcome for walking out in protest, imagine the welcome he'd get if he used his resources as a deterrent to end the conflict once and for all. It just takes one brave man and the whole Ummah will be behind him, inshAllah.

To the editor of this article. There is a difference between the people's view and the governmental/militarial view. We the Turkish people are disturbed at the fact that the Turkish Military is not run by Turkish people, but Neo-Con Zionist Freemasons. We the Turkish people love our brothers in the Ummah in the very much and we hate these Freemason Zionists who run our people. Laicist are an enemy to the Turkish race and just because the Zionist Assholes In Ankara suck Israels asses, doesn't mean we the Turkish people. Infact, we the Turkish people care for our persecuted brothers in the Ummah (Like in Pathan Province in Thailand, In the South Phillipines, Kashmir, East Turkistan, Chechnya, Kosovo, Bosnia, Lebanon, Palestine and so on.) We love our Muslim bros more than anything and we want these Zionist scums to just leave us alone. Because you can never trust a Zionist ever. Even Jews hate Zionists. Why do you think in Turkey, during a Turkey Vs. Israel soccer game, we hurled shoes at Israeli soccer players? Why are Israeli tourists fearing for their lives when they try to go to Turkiye? Think about it guys, we hate our Munafiq Kafir Yahudi Military very much and we want to destroy it. The people of Turkey love the Ummah and love Islam and we were the leaders of the Ummah for 6 centuries straight. Those Munafiq Kafir Bastards rulling our country do not represent 99% of the Turkish people, because the Ottoman Mujahid spirit is alive, Brothers Of The Ummah!

On the issue of misleading, you would have to spell out exactly what is misleading. Any deviation from the truth would be misleading, highlighting some aspects at the expense of others would be misleading. Would you like to highlight a single rhetorical act by Erdogan to outweigh all else that is happening on the ground. This is not the first time, we have seen appeasing actions from muslim leaders. The last century is full of such experiences. Erdogan has had more than enough time, resources and ability to voice (if not act) his clear opinion to the world about what is happening in Gaza. It would be indeed misleading to be mislead in reading this incident. Therefore it is a duty to bring such hypocrisy to the fore.

As for creating disunity among Turks, you also have to mention what unity that is under threat from this article. Are you calling for all to support Erdogan's party at the expense of islam, the turks and the ummah. The difficulty of the ummah is not alleviated by these actions in the slightest, rather only gives false hopes and distraction efforts in the wrong direction to exacerbate her plight.

As for appreciation of bravery, you would have to enlighten me on which bravery you are talking about. A brave act is one which entails high risk and possibility of loss. With exceptionally strong trade, military and political relations, Erdogan's walk-out carries not even an ounce of risk or loss. On the other hand he is well aware of the sentiment in Turkey and around the world including the west. After the incident, Israel was quick to point out that all was well with their relations with Turkey. The muslims do not fall short in showing appreciation; what we do fall short is in identifying what really deserves the noble ummah's appreciation.

Political analysis requires a perspective, global view and sufficient information about the subject. In addition it also requires seriousness for it to have substance.

An act of bravery should be appreciated, specially at the time when rest of the Muslim Country Leaders were silent spectators, Erdagon stood and criticised Israil.
I am sorry to say that this artical is misleading, instead of bringing muslims at one platform, it has spread hatred against the muslim's of Turky.
Wrong, so wrong. A true muslim will always appreciate bravery, even if it is his rival.

When an action is commited the reaction needs to be proportianate to the initial action, so when israel commited its cowardly crime against the muslims in gaza the reaction required was to send in muslim armies, no half measures like walking out of conferences nor boycotts, look we should not be sugar coating our words liberation is what is required, we have a history where rulers have stood up to the superpowers of their time, we are large in number but small in action. No nation will tolerate so many of their people being killed while idly standing by, what a waste of muslim soldiers.

I agree with the article. I can't believe the comments of Mohammed Ismail who thinks that HT is a threat to the unity of the ummah by constantly criticisising. Erdogan's macho actions were aimed at making himself look good knowing full well they would achieve little more than fooling the ignorant.

asalaamu alaykum,

While I don't disbute all the facts mentioned in the article I think that showing a little bit of appreciation for the small things these leaders do will go a long way... and maybe even encourage them to do more. It's a well known fact that people naturally respond more to positive reinforcement.

May Allah guide our ummah and our leaders ameen!

Salam dear brothers in Islam. I think we have to appreciate that people dying is no small thing and the beloved Messaenger of Allah said That a drop of muslim blood spilt unjustly is more valuable than the Ka'ba and its surroundings. In light of this fact I think we have to recognise that walking out of a debate towards dinner time in Davos is a mild response to say the least, to what is a huge munkar. Another point to note that if one looks at Turkish GDP figures , they are not in need of trade with the Israelis. The military is certainly a modern military with all the trimmings, so it has no need to conduct military exercises with Israel. Cutting of water supplies to Israel is again a mild political action that does not compromise Turkey's strategic depth. The 'one step at a time' approach while may seem the to you the right way to go to you...is not going to lead us anywhere but to the same dead end that the Oslo Accord lead to. How many more have to die while we are crawling like snails through the political quagmire?

A weak government like AKP ruling now is not a real solution for ummah..

A true leadership is only leading the people to the right path of Allah and Rasool with correct ideas and methods of Islam. Not a weak leadership like Erdogan, which is less power to rule the people and to change the kufr reality of turki secular constitution because afraid of the military wing.

In Islam, a true leadership (which is KHILAFAH RASYIDAH ALA MINHAJ AN-NUBUWWAH) is leading the ummah with Islamic systems and Laws and fully backup by the military, not being oppressed by the military to follow the secular constitution like Erdogan and AKP (a weak party).

RE: Muhammad Ismail

The Ummah loves Islam and its understandable that whenever they see a glimpse of Islam in any of our rulers they rush to support them. However, we must always base our views and actions on the Islamic shar'a and not let our emotions cloud our judgement.

If someone is committing a munkar (evil) we are obliged to change it with our hands if we are capable, if not our tongues if we are capable and if not hate it in our hearts.

Erdogan is ruling by kufr. This is an open, clear action. According to the Qur'an anyone ruling by other than what Allah سبحانه وتعالى has revealed is either a fasiq, dhalim or kafir. We are obliged to forbid the munakr of Erdogan. If we do not we will be accountable to Allah سبحانه وتعالى

Erdogan is saying one thing with his tongue - criticising Israel, whilst at the same time actively supporting Israel militarily and economically. This is hypocrisy. Saying one thing and doing something else.

I'm disgusted by this post! I think this is by far the most absurd post I have read in yrs!! I'm not Turkish nor do I have a great deal of knowledge of the foreign relations of Turkey. But I do know that although Turkey has traditionally been a great ally of Israel, Erdogen is the only PM they have had who doesn't want to be an ally of Israel and is GRADUALLY aiming to quit Turkey's ties with Israel. So why on earth are you blaming Erdogen for the support Turkey has traditionally shown to Israel :s.

Jeez. It's people like you who are destroying this ummah and the any chance we have of unity. All people like you do is criticize, criticize and criticize! For God's sakes at least appreciate the fact that he's done SOMETHING! You can't just take a massive step like 'cancel all ties with Israel' OVERNIGHT if you've had strong relations with them for the last 60 yrs (which is obviously petrifying to hear!). You have to take it one step at a time!

BOTTOM LINE - DONT MIX HIS BELIEFS & VALUES WITH THAT OF TURKEY!! GO ERDOGEN!

I think the writer of this blog should be FIRED! You have no knowledge of politics, you're post makes no sense and you seem to be a bird brain who just enjoys criticizing!

O our brothers in Islam in Turkey,
Please propagate this message as much as possible as it contains facts and history of your puppet rulers. Those rulers are deceiving our Ummah by paying a fake role time to time. Let your countrymen know that the way they showed their tribute to this ruler is not a matter of contentment in fact. Let the Ummah know their true characteristics and motives. You can have posters and leaflets based on this message. May Allah (SWT) guide us all to the true path. Ameen.
