Whilst there is great concern about the Chinese regime seeking to impose its authority over the indigenous Turkic population of East Turkistan (Sinkiang or Uyghuristan), measures to defend the Uyghurs are very difficult. China (unlike the Muslim World) has no time to let other nations dictate its own affairs. People from the Far East are very resolute and independent minded people and pursue their own policies irrespective of what other people think. Pakistan is an ally of China (which is in a much stronger position). China, (unlike Pakistan) can secure its borders and does have a strong independent leadership which does not compromise on Chinese security. Crucially China is very assertive, (enjoying close relations with an increasingly vociferous Russia). Pakistan, unfortunately dares not to even defend its own territorial integrity, and abandons strategically sensitive areas such as Afghanistan, Kashmir, and even its major airfields or ports. With India seeking to reassert itself as a respected power, (historically India was a major player) and flexing its capabilities in the Indian Ocean and Central Asia; Pakistan seems hard pushed to hold its own (let alone push for the rights of people from Uyghuristan). Kazakhstan, Uyghuristan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, are increasingly valuable territories. Chinese energy demands are very high, and Uyghuristan has oil fields and other natural resources. China views this province like the U.S.A views the Persian Gulf states, and Russia views energy rich Siberia. With the overland route Trans-national pipelines being built, connecting China and Russia via Central Asia, Uyghuristan becomes ever more important for China (even more so than Tibet). Unlike Tibet, there is no interest in showing ‘concern’ for heavy handed tactics. Persia is preoccupied with trying to deflect U.S encroachment in the Near East (and looks towards China and Russia for some measure of security). Syria and Lebanon have little defence against Israeli strikes. There are few states that seem to be able (or willing) to defend themselves, which is taken as a sign of weakness by belligerent nations. |
